This cocktail makes my top ten, possibly even my top five, it's that good

Created in 1938 by the Head Bartender of the famous Carousel Bar at the Hotel Monteleone, Walter Bergeron.  Named after the local name for the French Quarter in New Orleans where the bar is situated and is still serving to this day.

How to make a Vieux Carre cocktail at home

Ingredients

  • 25ml Bourbon
  • 25ml VSOP Cognac
  • 25ml Sweet Vermouth
  • 5ml Benedictine
  • 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 2 Dashes Peychaud Bitters
  • Garnish - Lemon zest in the glass

Instructions

  • Fill a mixing glass with ice
  • Pour in the ingredients in the order listed
  • Stir for 30 seconds
  • Fine strain into a chilled cocktail (martini) glass
  • Squeeze the lemon zest over the surface of the drink and drop it into the glass
