Brandy Crusta

Andy Pearson

Andy says...

Many believe this cocktail to be the ancestor of the Sidecar

One of the reasons some people promote the idea of adding a sugar rim to a Sidecar is the belief that it is related to the Brandy Crusta; this cocktail getting its name due to the 'crust' of sugar around the top of the glass.

How to make a Brandy Crusta cocktail at home

Ingredients

  • 50ml Cognac (VSOP if possible)
  • 7.5ml Cointreau
  • 7.5ml Maraschino Liqueur
  • 7.5ml Sugar Syrup (2:1)
  • 15ml Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 2 Dashes of Angostura Bitters
  • Garnish - A lemon zest and a sugar rim

Instructions

  • Take a flute and rub sugar syrup on both the outside and inside of the top of the glass
  • On the inside wrap a wide lemon zest (the syrup will help it stick as it sets)
  • Also, roll the outside in a saucer of caster sugar
  • Pour all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker
  • Fill with ice and shake
  • Fine strain into your pre-prepared glass

Andy's Top Tip - If you intend to serve this drink to friends prepare the glasses with the sugar and lemon zest well in advance, to save time, and to help the sugar to set
