Ironically this cocktail is extremely fashionable

A permanent favourite with bartenders, this incredible cocktail has come back into the public eye primarily due to the exploits of Don Draper (Mad Men).

How to make a Old Fashioned cocktail at home

Ingredients

  • 1 Teaspoon Caster Sugar 
  • 2 Dashes Orange Bitters
  • 2 Dashes Aromatic Bitters
  • 5ml Soda Water
  • 65ml Bourbon (or American Rye)
  • Garnish - Orange Zest (and an optional maraschino cherry)

Instructions

  • Add the caster sugar, bitters and soda into a mixing glass
  • Work the mixture into a paste using a spoon
  • Add 1/3 of the ice cubes and 25ml Bourbon, then stir 30 times 
  • Add 1/3 more ice cubes and 20ml more Bourbon, then stir 30 times 
  • Add 1/3 more ice cubes and 20ml more Bourbon, then stir 30 times 
  • Strain the liquid into an ice-filled rocks glass
  • Drop in the cherry (if you're using one) and stir briefly
  • Squeeze the orange zest over the top and then drop into the drink
