Negroni

Andy says...

Every bartender's second favourite cocktail

There are numerous stories related to the origin of the Negroni cocktail, however it seems that all roads lead back to one central figure, Count Camillo Negroni.  There even seems to be some debate as to whether he was actually in fact a Count or that perhaps it was more of an honorary title he bestowed upon himself, but what is clear is that we owe him a debt of gratitude for being involved in the creation of one of the greatest cocktails ever made.

The drink itself is the evolution of a previously popular cocktail the Americano (formerly known as a Milano-Torino after the two main ingredients Campari (of Milan) and Martini & Rossi sweet vermouth (of Turin) - finished with a splash of soda as the third and final ingredient).  The story goes that Count Camillo Negroni needed a drink with a little more bite, and so one evening in 1919 at the Casoni Bar (later renamed Caffe Giacosa) in Milan bartender Fosco Scarselli added gin instead of soda and the Negroni was born.

For the full story read Gary Regan's incredible book The Negroni: Drinking to La Dolce VIta.

How to make a Negroni cocktail at home

Ingredients

  • 25ml Gin
  • 25ml Campari
  • 25ml Martini Rosso
  • Garnish - Orange Zest or a simple Orange Wedge

Instructions

  • Pour all of the ingredients into an ice-filled rocks glass
  • Stir several times with a spoon but don't over-do it
  • Garnish - Make your choice from the following:
    • Squeeze the orange oil over the drink and then discard the zest, add an orange wedge into the glass
    • Squeeze the orange oil over the drink and then drop in into the glass
    • Forget about orange zests and just throw a wedge of orange into the glass
    • Enjoy!

Andy's Top Tip - I like this drink stirred in a mixing glass (see video), but I only recommend doing that if you're going to pour it over 1 solid block of ice, not over regular ice cubes, otherwise it becomes too diluted (In my opinion)
