Hemingway Daiquiri

Andy Pearson

Andy says...

Created for Ernest Hemingway at La Floridita, Havana.

Created for Ernest Hemingway at the La Floritida bar in Havana, Cuba by Constante Ribalaigua when Hemingway requested their signature Daiquiri be made without sugar and with double the rum.  Some years later Antonio Meilan added the Maraschino and grapefruit juice to give us this version of the drink.  This cocktail is also known under the name Papa Doble, after the writer affectionate nick-name born of his preference for double the amount of rum in his drinks.  He requested no sugar as he suffered from a rare disease, haemochromotosis, that can manifest itself as diabetes.

How to make a Hemingway Daiquiri cocktail at home

Ingredients

  • 45ml Bacardi (Double this if you think you can keep up with Hemingway!)
  • 7.5ml Maraschino Liqueur
  • 20ml Fresh Lime Juice
  • 15ml Grapefruit Juice
  • Garnish - I see Hemingway as a no garnish kind of guy, but a twist of grapefruit in the glass or a lime wedge on the rim won't do any harm!

Instructions

  • Pour all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker
  • Fill with ice and shake
  • Fine strain into a chilled coupe glass
  • Throw a garnish at it if you feel so inclined, or not!

Andy's Top Tip - If there is no medical reason why you can enjoy sugar I recommend adding 10ml of sugar syrup as it makes this infinitely more balanced.
